The world of the Touloulous
14 June 2018 - 10 March 2019
The Carnival of Cayenne is one of the major events of French Guyana. On Sunday afternoon, groups of costumed people parade around decorated floats to the rhythm of percussion and brass instruments. However, the characteristic element of this folklore are the evening balls. On Saturday evening, the tropical heat is going up a notch at the “parés-masqués” balls where you can meet with the mysterious and intriguing creatures called “Touloulous”.
About fifty costumes and masks were on display. They were collected during a field mission in 2016 and are now part of the Museum’s collections. The scenography combined collection items, sound installations and immersive videos made by the French association “Super Chimère”.
